<Saif> The slope itself is made of mostly compacted dirt and sand.
<Saif> It looks like part of the cavern wall behind it gave way long ago
<Saif> The surface of the slope is fairly smooth, although rocks are common
<Saif> As they start up the slope they begin to notices piles of larger rocks here and there
<Saif> Soon these piles become quite common - about one every 20 square feet or so on the average
<Saif> The larger piles are anywhere from 2 to 6 feet across and made up of larger rocks, as if somebody swept all the big rocks into nice piles
<Saif> The area where these piles appear is shown by the second dotted line, the one that comes down, across, and back up
<Kat> "Sane, I could follow above them, if you wish."
<Saif> Near the top of this area is where Castinar and Matar believe the entrance to the beetle nest is, but Matar and Xaveus don't see anything obvious, just more piles of rocks

<Saif> Kat - this cavern is fairly damp (although fortunately not so damp that your slippers don't work), so there is fungus growing here and there

<Saif> Cast - you find tons of tracks in the area moving all over. Obvioulsy this area sees a lot of beetle movement.
<Matar> is there a pile where we thought the entrance was?
<Kat> **Didn't we think that there was an entrance here? If it is not here, and these rocks have been here for a long time, there would be fungus all over the area that we thought was the entrance.
<Saif> Ah, I see Kat, the whole floor area is bare of fungus. The fungus you see is up on the walls
<Saif> Matar - in the general area you thought the entrance was you see at least three piles
* Matar gives the all clear signal.
<Xaveus> The grinding sound that we heard, did that come from this general area or from down below?
<Saif> This general area but underground

<Saif> Castinar, your search of the tracks does show that there is more traffic up around the area you believe the entrance to be, but it is too messed up to determine exactly where it is
<Saif> Matar - of the three piles one is about 6', and the other two about 4'

* Kat will go back to the group as Matar and Xaveus do.

<Sane> *So, there's no sign of an entrance or sign of a caved in entrance or anything like that?

<Kat> "The area is not right. There isn't enough fungus growing around it. The pile of rocks were just put there."

<Nikki> "I think the beetles escaped underground."
* Matar explains, "Okay this is what we've got - The beetles felt us to be a threat and sealed all their holes. We have two options - ignore them and move on - bad because they'll be out in no time. Two Dig down in some fashion and attack them in their lair - icky if we get caught in the tunnels and they may be able to clear them faster then us and we could be swarmed from the other tunnels and surrounded. er 3rd is to wait a week or so an
* Amber wonders outloud if the beetles are rolled up into balls pretending to be rocks, like sowbugs do above ground.
<Matar> try and charge through the tunnels before they can seal them

* Nikki votes for moving on and ignoring them for now.

<Castinar> "Kat, I'd say the beetle traffic keeps the fungus down... they are crawling all over that area. That, and the floor isn't as damp (got lots of dust/grit/sand from the earlier cave in), so is probably draining the water a bit better

* Nikki experimentally kicks the ground beneath her checking for beetles rising from the earth.
* Castinar thinks that they will just ignore us. The big ones only came out (in my opinion) when they were threatened by "outsiders"

* Nikki will experiment a bit with Azure while we're sitting around. Can Azure do anything to the light stones? Change their color, stop them glowing, make them brighter, etc?

<Saif> Yes, Azure can easily change the color of the light stones to shades of blue. he can mute them, but not stop them from glowing completly. He can augment them with his own light, but not make them glow brighter in and of themselves.

* Thengal takes full advantage of the rest period, and promply naps

<Saif> On Sane's fly-by at the end of the second hour he finds several smaller beetles crawling around the slope area. There is a hole about half way down the hill that they have apparently emerged from. There are stones scattered around the hole.
<Saif> The fish in here are rather small (fingerling size), so the net is too big to catch any
<Sane> *Saif, Kat and Sane will split the duties.
<Sane> *so Kat can take the next two hours, then we'll switch again.
* Sane tells everyone (who is awake) about the beetles.
<Saif> OK, Sane, do you do anything when you spot the beetles?
<Sane> No, just circle once to get a good look.
<Kat> "Sane, you could go tell Ari and Castinar about the beetles."
* Nikki will practice various swimming creatures and breathing under water with gills. water elfs, *large* too-big-for-a-penguin fish, bears, giant beavers, and any thing else reasonable the others suggest.
* Sane goes and tells Ari and Castinar about the beetles.
<Saif> The beetles seem to be circling around a lot. You realize they are spending lots of time in the areas where Matar, Castinar, and Xaveus stood

<Saif> Castinar finds he has to follow the penguins across the water as Nikki's antics near the shore scare the birds
* Sane takes a moment to watch Castinar. <Ariessus, why do you suppose he wants to learn such a shape?> Sane winks.

<Saif> So Kat takes the next scouting trip in an hour?

<Saif> It is about twenty minutes after Sane informs Ari that he has seen beetles around when Ari hears clicking noises from some distance behind her.

<Saif> Ari wanders off to the middle of the cavern, where she spots a couple beetles wandering around, feeling the ground with their antenna (actually tasting the ground)

<Saif> The beetles are heading in the general direction of the water. Ari hears several others outside her vision moving around the cavern as well

* Amber dreams of dolphins and sea elves and starts to speak sea elf out loud in greetings...
<Saif> Ari quickly discovers the beetles don't have a very good sense of sight. They wander up to about 20' from her before they start waving their antenna around in the air in her general direction. Hold your ground?
* Ari will turn and head back to Castinar, asking K'harn to inform Hunter that we have beelte company coming
<Saif> K'harn goes loping off to tell Hunter, who passes the news on to the party
<Saif> Ari discovers that the penguins are no longer swimming near her. They are apparently across the water.
<Xaveus> *Flipper, Flipper? Wonder if Cast tastes like tuna?
* Nikki recovers the light stone as any good dolphin would do and returns to land in her normal form.
<Ari> "Cast, time to go. Beetles getting close." She stands and waits for him watching for beetles.
<Saif> Sane and Kat both know about the beetles wandering around the cavern now

* Amber goes where directed, ready to fight if need be.

* Matar moves out at a fast jog and charges any beetle he sees.
<Kat> "I think we should take out the wandering ones."

<Thengal> Thengal heads out behind him. Heading toward the two elves
<Kat> "Even if we aren't quiet, we will eliminate their numbers."
<Kat> "And, I think we should do it now."
* Sane gets some lights stones handy. <I will fly and stay unseen. I'll drop light stones.>
<Saif> K, hold on just a sec, something going on in the cave while you guys are discussing this
<Sane> *Yes, we're moving out Saif.

* Sane flies down the tunnel ahead of the group. He'll head for the sounds of beetles if he hears it.

<Castinar> I was able to calm them down slightly -- enough that they decided not to attack. However, they were still nervous at our presence.... nervous, but not agressive
<Saif> So the party moves en masse into the cavern to battle the beetles?
<Sane> *yes
* Castinar thought we were leaving them alone?
* Matar runs off to find the wanderers while the rest of the party goes straight to the nest."
<Saif> Castinar is about to learn otherwise (I think)
<Sane> <Now that they're moving, we should take out those that we can.>
<Castinar> "Wasn't the plan to just pass them?"

* Castinar looks at Sane, then at the rest
<Matar> "That was the plan while they were in their hidey hole - but if they've given us another chance then we'll take it."
<Kat> "There might be treasure in the beetle lair. We could use it."

* Amber yawns and straightens her hat.

<Saif> So the plan is for Matar to go out and chop up those wandering around the cavern while the rest of the party heads straight for the nest area?

<Saif> The party is starting to approach the nest when Matar only wounds a beetle instead of killing it. The beetle starts making the grinding noise before Matar can finish it off.
<Saif> This sound sets all the other beetles in the cavern to grinding. The party was just approaching another.
<Saif> As soon as the grinding starts it turns and scampers quickly back towards the nest area.
<Saif> * hold just a sec
<Sane> *how close are we?
<Matar> hmm what about shock of glove?
<Castinar> *Cast detect magic, and move quickly toward the source of the noise (primary source)
<Nikki> * it's scripted.
<Saif> * the party is about 400' from the beetle entrance at this time
<Saif> * yeah, it's scripted (they would survive on a 1 to get a warning out)
<Saif> * so you did really, really well with all but one
<Sane> *Sane's flying, right? Can he be there already circling overhead?

* Sane cruises over the nest, especially the opening.
<Saif> Sane passes over the nest and discovers that there are now two openings, one where he first saw the beetles and another higher up on the hill.

<Saif> As the grinding starts a large beetle squeezes out of the higher up hole
<Saif> while most of the smaller beetles scamper for the holes

<Saif> So, what do you do?
<Kat> *Define large beetle?

* Sane drops a light stone near the big one, lands a safe distance away along a wall and casts Spectral Force.
