<Saif> That sounds like it's talking about henchmen.  So what's the difference between a cohort who follows a PC from the Leadership feat, and a cohort that just follows them around because they are hired to do so?

<Count_Arm> well there arn't henchmen in 3rd ed as far as ive seen

<Saif> It looks like there are two types - those that "seek out" the PC, and those that are "hired" by them.

<Saif> Your special cohort will be the "seek out" kind, but will be singular.  You can then hire additional cohorts (the old henchmen), but their level and abilities will be determined more by the color of your coin than your reputation and leadership ability.

<Count_Arm> right and loyal cohorts become trusted friends etc

<Saif> There's another diff - looks like leadership cohorts are automatically played by the player.  Hired cohorts can get to that point if well treated and loyal.

<Saif> So, for now, you get the free one (7th level).  In the future (next time in town, whatever) you (or anybody else, for that matter) can hire additional ones.

<Castinar> "It looks like we've come to the branch on the gnomes' map.  A large tunnel cuts off at a 90 degree angle here

<Castinar> They have some simple fortifications set up

<Castinar> They jut out into the tunnel we're traveling down, and back into their tunnel.

<Castinar> The fortifications are about 15 or 20 feet tall

<Castinar> There is a derro with a crossbow atop each, one looking in our direction, the other looking down the other direction

<Castinar> I saw a third derro at one point.  He came up and talked to the derro on the far side, then walked out of my line of sight, back down the side tunnel.

<Castinar> * Questions?

<Castinar> Yes, fortifications are of stone.  They are not dressed very well.  Thengal would be embarassed.  But they will do.

<Kat> "There was some derro working with the kuo-toa and the illithiad.  This might be an outpost for the City of the Glass Pool."

<Castinar> Not very far, the fortifications were in the way

<Castinar> Kat - no, but they seemed to be fairly alert

<Count_Arm> are derro susceptible to sleep?

<Castinar> Also they have the tunnel you are in lit up for several hundred feet in each direction by glowing globes

<Castinar> * are you asking somebody that, Matar?

<Kat> "Any magic traps?"

<Castinar> "That's your job Kat, not mine.  No, not that were obvious."

<Count_Arm> im asking the group - prolly cast or nikki

<Amber> "If the 3rd Derro talked to the far guard, perhaps they are expecting visitors from that direction?"

<Castinar> It was Sane that did the research on Derro.  Cast would know that they are resistant to magic, even more so than normal dwarves, but no specifics.

<Castinar> to Amber - Cast shrugs.  "I didn't get close enough to hear what they were discussing."

<Count_Arm> ah thought rangers usually knew a bit about their hated race

<Amber> "Just surmising, didn't think you could hear them or lipread." and she grins.

<Castinar> yes, but not specific immunities and weaknesses, unless they have IC studied that, which Cast hasn't

<Count_Arm> Did it look like there were slits in the fortifactions hiding other archers?

<Castinar> to Matar "Not that I noticed, but the rock-work was not awe inspiring.  Some of the cracks could be fired through."

<Count_Arm> "Can we find another way around in some side tunnels or do we have to get past this?"

<Castinar> "But I didn't get the impression that the tower was hollow.  The outer wall didn't look sturdy enough to be weight-bearing.  Maybe Thengal could tell for sure."

* Castinar shakes his head. "I haven't noticed any large side tunnels for the past day or two."

<Count_Arm> "What was the source of this light?"

<Kat> "Can you detect any other life besides the three you saw?  ARe there any spells that might tell us more about their forts?"

<Castinar> They are small globes, about yeah big (holds out his hands about 9" apart) that glow.  Not as strong as a continual light spell, but they do provide plenty of light to see by.  They are placed all up and down the tunnel

<Castinar> to Kat "No, just those three.  As for spells, I don't have any"

<Kat> "Diana, do you have any spells that might tell us more about it?"

<Count_Arm> "Can't Derro see in the dark?  Why would they need light?"

* Castinar shakes his head. "No, they can't see in the dark like pure dwarves can. They see about as good as an elf."

<Castinar> * Hold on, that's a change from 2e to 3e that I didn't catch

<Castinar> * they do have dark vision now, but not at any great distance

<Castinar> * Ok, how about

* Castinar shrugs. "They can see in the dark, yes, but not to any great distance. If they want to use those crossbows effectively then they need light."

<Count_Arm> "Do our darkness spells block these new glass thingys?"

<Castinar> Nikki says "If they function like normal light spells they may temporarily darken them, but it would take a Greater Darkness spell cast directly on them to neutralize them."

<Count_Arm> "No no I mean our new darkvision glasses or the spell we started using!"

<Kat> "You mean, does the darkness spells make the glasses not work.  I would guess that it does."

* Amber continues to keep her eyes peeled for danger to the sides and in back.  Only paying half of her attention to the discussion.

<Count_Arm> * i dunno we used to have some

<Kat> * The ones that those elves and drow used to cast
