Chat Summary

6 April, 2001

Round Three of the Battle at the Crossroads came out in e-mail.  We started the session with Round Four.  The party did well, and we only needed two more rounds of combat.

In round four Nikki moves closer, trying to catch sight of an enemy.

Ari was hit by a dagger thrown by one of the derro, which was then killed by Katrina’s arrows.

Diana got things cooking by throwing a fireball right into the middle of the melee.  Three of the derro and one of the Illithid resisted her magic completely.  One Illithid was burned, and one derro killed by the flames.  Matar and Thengal were both burned, as were K’harn and Ari, although the last two managed to avoid the worst of the blast.

Bohica tried his magic missiles against a derro, but they proved ineffective.

Matar was stabbed by another derro, which K’harn then killed, catching it from behind.

The burned Illithid walked out and tried to blast Diana, Ari, and Katrina, but all of them managed to resist the mental assault.   Shadow fired at it, but missed.  Ari tried to fry it with a Flame Strike, but the flames didn’t harm the evil creature.

Amber spent the night back in the tunnel, waiting to see if anybody got badly hurt and watching the party’s rear flank.

Castinar moved up to the fortress.  Looking through the gaps in the stones he saw one of the Illithid standing there.  He poked his crossbow through a hole and managed to hit the mind flayer with one of his shots.

The flayer looked, but couldn’t figure out where the bolt came from, so he made his way outside.  He hid around the corner of the building and tried to blast Matar and Thengal.  They both resisted, but K’harn was caught at the edge of the blast and was stunned.  Thengal started yelling at the creatures and he charged forward, badly injuring it with a mighty swing of his axe.

With round five the tide of battle was heavily in favor of the party.  Both Illithid were injured.  All of the derro were dead.  Most of the party was still up and fighting, with only Matar and K’harn stunned.  Nobody was badly injured, although Thengal was still smoking.

Nikki tried a volley of magic missiles, but the flayer shrugged them off.

Diana cast Haste on herself, then threw several Acid Arrows at the Illithid, which it again ignored.

Bohica finally made it through the illithid’s impressive spell resistance, sinking four magic missiles into the creature.

But it was Katrina that made the “Play of the Day”.  Even though the Illithid had half cover, she sunk an arrow right into his eye.  The one shot did 37 points of damage.  As the Illithid slumped back against the door frame she sunk another arrow into his chest, finishing him off.

Castinar tried to make it through the greasy area to help Thengal, but slipped and fell next to Ariessus.

The final opponent somehow realized his predicament.  Even with Thengal standing right next to him he decided to risk a spell to try and get himself out of there.  He cast the spell.  Thengal tried to hit him, but misses, and the Illithid vanished.

The party spent a few moments ensuring that the flayer had, in fact, departed.  Finally convinced of that it was safe, they gathered after Castinar burned a path through the grease.  Healing spells were cast, K’harn and Matar quickly recovered, and soon everybody was full-up once again.

They split up to explore the area.  Castinar tried to find something of interest in the main fortification, but anything that may have given the party a clue about their opponents had been burned away by the fireball.  Katrina searched the bodies of the slain.  She found a rather pretty brooch on one of the illithids, and matching brooches on each of the derro.  Ari examined all of them and announced that none were magic.  Katrina told the others that these are the brooches worn by the tribe of derro that guard the margins of the City of the Glass Pool.

In her search Katrina also noticed something else.  All of the derro smelt faintly of fish.

Amber gathered a few of the light globes.  Kat also finds several poisoned bolts, which are split between Ari and Castinar.  Each gets one covered in a paste derived from greenblood oil, and six covered with a paste of concentrated spider venom.

(OOC: the brooches that the derro were wearing can be seen at http://www.bluearch.net/night/i/ph18.gif)

Feel free to discuss what you want to do next.  You may want to review the maps and player handouts (like the journal pages) up on the web page.  Matar, once a consensus develops (or once you get tired of arguments) tell me what the party does.
